The Abyss is a small side canyon within Grand Canyon, located about 5 miles west of Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim. It is characterized by sheer vertical walls that drop 3,000 feet to the Tonto Plateau. This is in contrast to many other locations frequented by Grand Canyon tourists, where the immediate dropoff is “only” 300 to 500 feet. Here, the Abyss is a dumping ground for anything I feel needs to be posted, but doesn’t fit neatly under any other menu item. Yes, this is the “junk drawer” of Canyon Eupho.
